Pregnancy in mares is a critical time that requires specialized knowledge, care, and management to ensure the health and well-being of both the mare and her developing foal. This course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the physiological changes mares undergo during pregnancy, the necessary care they require, and the best practices for managing the foaling process.
Throughout this course, participants will gain in-depth knowledge of mare reproduction, pregnancy stages, nutritional needs, and common health challenges that may arise. They will also learn to prepare a safe and comfortable foaling environment, recognize signs of labor, and provide proper postpartum care for both mare and foal.
This course is delivered online along with supporting downloadable course materials. It is is broken down into modules which will include online tutorials, a comprehensive manual to download, and video demos. Within each module, you’ll be guided through a variety of slides including informative text, engaging videos, and downloadable materials.
Before you watch our demos, you will first go through our training manual, that way, you’ll have a grasp of the subject matter before seeing it in action.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
– Understand the anatomy and physiology of the mare’s reproductive system and hormonal regulation.
– Identify the stages of pregnancy and key fetal development milestones.
– Develop tailored nutrition and health care plans for pregnant mares.
– Recognise and manage common pregnancy-related complications, such as colic and placentitis.
-Prepare for foaling, including recognising signs of labor and setting up a safe environment.
-Assist during foaling and provide immediate postpartum care for mare and foal.
-Manage high-risk pregnancies, including twin pregnancies and older mares.
-Apply ethical breeding practices focused on mare and foal welfare.
– Written assignments or quizzes on mare pregnancy
– Practical exams (e.g., assisting during foaling or monitoring pregnancy)
